John Lennon sang "life is what happens when you're
busy making other plans" and that certainly sums up our first week on the
mainland. Nothing has gone exactly the way I had thought it would.
For instance I was planning on making one trip to DMV to get my California
drivers license. In my mind it was going to be a simple procedure
just like getting my Hawaii drivers license was. I would walk up
to the front of the line, hand over my Hawaii license to the smiling DMV
clerk who would then enter all of my information into the computer and
print out a California license and hand it to me. The whole thing
was going to be as quick and easy as me spending money at Nordstrom.
But guess what Toto? I don't think we're in Hawaii anymore.
What actually transpired
was I walked in and saw a long line to stand in. When it was finally
my turn the DMV clerk was NOT smiling. She then informed me that
I was NOT getting a California license until I brought in my original birth
certificate or a certified, embossed copy thereof. Both of which
were down in L.A. at the Bat's house, and I had just left there the day
before!! As Charlie Brown would say: AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!
OK, no worries. I was
reasonably sure that Mom knew where my birth certificate was and could
FedEx it to me. The robotic clerk then suggested that I take the
California written test while I was there, which I BARELY passed.
I missed the maximum amount allowed. On most of the questions I was
just guessing. I sure hope nobody from my truck school is reading
this.
Anyhow, FIVE trips later,
I am finally in possession of an interim
California license.
The real one should arrive from Sacramento in three
weeks. And I thought
it was going to be made instantly. I'm just laughing at myself.
Here are some other events
that didn't go as planned: Wrigley the Wondermutt and Schnapps the
Rug Sausage are not getting along as well as I had planned. Wrigley
escaped from the yard and went zooming through the neighborhood sooner
then I had planned.
I'm having to give more urine
samples at more doctor's offices then I had planned. I'm encountering
more chauvinism going into this profession then I had planned. (I am sure
there will be an entire column dedicated solely to this subject in the
near future.)
One unexpected thing that
we actually enjoyed was an all day trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National
Parks. We let the Wondermutt experience snow for her first time...
she LOVED it!
School starts in TWO days
and in SIX days we will be taking our CDL
Class A written test. Alright!!
That's ANOTHER trip we get to make to DMV.
What a relief, because I
was just starting to miss seeing the green walls and friendly bureaucrats
down there. Wish us luck!!
Aloha from California,
Christine
