Go ahead,
welcome me back. God knows, I almost didn't make it. But here I am, again
at the bottom of the frontpage, "Below The Fold". This is where I'm destined
to spend my time, but thankfully, there are intelligent readers who are
willing to scroll a little to find me.
During my time away, I had
the opportunity to reflect on this business we're in, here at the site.
The delivery of news and views, of information and opinion, to you, anywhere
in the world, without the worry of censorship. Do you know what that means?
In these days of ever-increasing conglomeration, and combining of competitors,
it means that this is one of a dwindling number of outlets that will actually
tell you the unvarnished truth.
Let's face it, what do we
have to lose? We're not one of those overblown, overextended, overhyped
dot-coms that are laying off their staff left and right. We're not in some
powerbroker's pocket, conveniently agreeing with the company news releases.
We don't have to say "yessir" to anyone. Ask my editor, he'll tell you,
I don't toe the line. If you read it in this column, with my name on it,
I stand behind it. It's the truth, no matter who doesn't like it.
Over the past few weeks,
we've had to prove this to a certain group of liars...oops, that's a misprint,
make that "lawyers". They were under the mistaken impression that they
could bully me, and by doing so, bully this website...and for a while our
editors were actually buying into that crap. Well, you notice, I'm back
on the page. That's the thing about most bullies. They don't normally really
want to fight, they just want to push you around, to get you to bow down
and kiss their asses.
My lips are staying un-puckered.
And I will not print a retraction. If I write it, I research it, and clear
all the facts ahead of time. I am a journalist. That means I have an obligation
to you, my reader to give you more than just the facts. You're entitled
to the whole story.
Increasingly, you're going
to find, even in this wonderful nation that officially supports freedom
of the press, that the real truth is not always going to be available.
Where are you going to find it? Not on the nightly news. All those networks
are owned by each other and in turn by other larger mega-corporations that
have a vested interest in the information that you get in your newspaper,
your radio programs and anywhere else, including here on the internet.
At times, getting the straight
truth can be downright impossible. It's scary to consider all the newspapers
that have gone under or combined with their competition over the past twenty
years. Historically, every town of any size would have a morning and an
afternoon paper, and normally they were staunch competitors. That kept
the powermongers from owning and diverting the information stream.
Now, only a handful of larger
cities have more than one printed news voice, and now another one, the
Rocky Mountain News in Denver is riding off into the sunset. Oh, they'll
still be publishing an edition, and in therory, their editiorial department
will remain seperate from that of the Denver Post. But if history is any
guide, the Mile High City just lost an important source of unbiased information.
To all of you in that area, you have my sympathies. But look on the bright
side, at least you can surf the net and find the rest of the story. Until
big business completes it's masterplan of total domination.
