Aftermath
Finally, I have the opportunity
to write about anything except the presidential un-election. Thank
God, I can actually expound upon something interesting again. Finally,
the Supreme Court has made it all so clear: George W. Bush has managed
to elude the facts, play fast and loose with the numbers, and come out
the tarnished winner in this high-stakes card game.
Basically, the Omnipotent
Supremes, as they like to call themselves, have said the votes that were
not counted for whatever reason, will not ever be counted, and the people
who intended to vote are just out of luck. Too bad, your rights are
washing down the drain...so sorry. OK, so they're not sorry at all.
The entire smelly process has been suspect from the beginning.
Let's go back to the scene
of the crime: Election night,
-
The Networks are using sophisticated
tracking and forecasting techniques to call the elections almost as soon
as the polls close.
-
These are highly developed programs
administered by professional statisticians. The networks don't spare
the expense. If it takes millions of dollars to get an accurate prediction,
they spend it, they have to to maintain their reputations...and they did.
-
But for some reason, the professionals
were wrong...as the map of states began to fill red with some blue sections
scattered about, the results for Florida showed the Vice President would
likely take the state...and so
-
In a competitive rush, they
hurried to be first to announce the news. Then, inexplicably, the
High-Dollar anchors had to reluctantly retract their reports.
-
For some reason, the returns
from the Sunshine State were cloudy. Suddenly, instead of triumph,
Al Gore was looking at a race that was truly too close to call.
The difference between the officially
certified count showed a puny lead consisting of a mere handful of votes
in the Texas Governor's favor. A razor-thin advantage, statistically
insignificant, that developed completely independent of most proven mathematical
theories. A lead so small that a mandatory recount was envoked.
Unfortunately, many ballots
simply didn't get counted the first time around, much less on the rewind.
The reports later came to light that
-
Many voters claimed to have
been confused by a complicated ballot, and therefore may have accidentally
voted for the wrong candidate...
-
Many people were actually turned
away from the polls by elections officials who claimed it was too late,
even though many of them were in line long before the deadline.
-
Or how about the situation of
ballot manipulation by Republican election officials that was thrown out
of court in a most unceremonious manner.
-
Or the fact that the entire
election process in the Great State of Florida has been controlled from
top to bottom, from Governor to Secretary of State, to Judges, and local
elections officers by Republican party faithfuls.
Top to bottom, just too much
partisanship. Too much temptation, and too many opportunities to
deny the will of the people. That's the whole problem here.
You, my fellow Americans,
are the victims of a huge organized swindle. Your votes have been
stolen. Your voice in government has been subverted, and there's
not a damned thing you can do about it because the US Supreme Court, in
complete counterindication to it's charter has become a partisan body.
The majority of justices, who incidentally were appointed by Republican
Presidents, simply cannot leave that out of the equation.
Therefore, the fast talking
lawyers for Mr Bush have finally run out the clock. They've managed
to maneuver and contort the legal remedies Mr. Gore should have been able
to call upon, so that judges can make decisions without ever examining
evidence, so that even though there is a huge cloud of dishonesty hanging
over all their heads, the band will play all that much louder at the second
Bush Inauguration Ball.
Just one last thing:
Before you gloat too loudly, Republicans remember, your candidate was not
the true choice of the American people..the POPULAR vote went for Gore,
in excess of 300,000 votes...many times that of the difference that has
been finagled in Fla.. His is a bastard victory, unloved by a very
large portion of this diverse land.
Why else would his legal
team struggle so desperately to keep these votes from being counted properly.
If after a proper recount, Mr. Bush prevails, so be it. He would
be the legally elected candidate, and popularly accepted president.
Remember, if the will of the people were truly taken into account, the
Network anchors would have never changed their predictions on Election
night, the proper concession speech would have been gracefuly given, and
the great division we're suffering today would not exist. This has
truly been a very sorry day for democracy. |
