God
In Ohio

Excuse me, am I missing something here? The state of Ohio's motto has
been declared "unconstitutional"! Thanks to a suit brought by the beloved
ACLU, the simple phrase, "With God, all things are possible" is now illegal.
Of course, all of us carry coins with the equally inflammatory mantra,
"In God We Trust", and that's ok. Apparently, it's neutral enough, at least
for the time being. Soon, those offensively religious words will be removed
from Ohio's sight.
It's sad, but thank God there are wonderfully caring people such as
the ACLU....oops, I'm sorry...let me rephrase that...strike that errant
mention of God, and change it to "thank my attourney"...
There was a time when I would have never considered writing a negative
comment about the glorious ACLU. There was a time when I could admire their
determination to right wrongs and elevate those who were being left behind.
It was necessary, and relevant. Until now.
I have to wonder, don't you guys have some immigrants to defend, or
a school system to sue somewhere? Where do you get off trying to sanitize
society into a homogenized blandness? How does "With God, all things are
possible" cause harm to the good citizens of Ohio? Does it warp the sensibilities
of their children?
This is one of those instances that reminds you why lawyers are generally
regarded in a less than complimentary way by most intelligent people. The
only thing that matters is victory. So what that this is just one more
chink out of our national identity.
Who cares that people don't feel safe much of the time, thanks to crime
and violence. Who gives a damn that outrageously vulgar TV shows actually
ARE warping the sensibilities of our children, and ourselves?
You can be sure it's not the Civil Liberties Union, unless of course,
there's a case to be brought. Apparently, the result of these lawsuits
are not the issue...just the billable hours. |
