According to a recent poll in Teen Magazine, 54% of American teenagers approve of homosexuality. In my humble opinion, this is almost, but not quite as relevant as approving of Tuesday. Tuesday, like homosexuality, exists, and whether you approve of it or not, every seven days there it is again. This recent revelation does pose a question however. Is it suddenly hip to be queer? For the past decade or so being a lesbian was chic. (Actually, if you’re an avid reader of Penthouse Forum, lesbians have been cool for decades, but I digress.) The lesbian plot line was a staple of TV in the 90’s. From LA Law to Roseanne, a lesbian kiss was a guaranteed ratings winner, mostly reserved for sweeps week but male homosexuality was a rare thing. The only memorable TV fag was poor Steven Carington of Dynasty fame, who’s on again/off again homosexuality was as confusing for the viewers as it was for him. But now, as we enter a more enlightened time, closet doors are flying open and gays are popping up everywhere on TV. According to a quasi-reliable source (Jerry Fallwell) there are (drum roll please) 29 reoccurring gay characters on TV!!! Admittedly, having a life I don’t watch that much TV. I would be hard pressed to name 5 gay characters, though I must admit I’ve long believed that there were gay characters on TV. They however, unlike their hetro co-stars, didn’t constantly burden everyone they know by lamenting over their sex lives. Really folks, is there anyone with an IQ in triple digits who didn’t wonder how both Ginger and Maryanne could spend what seems like decades on that island with 3 single men, and Not get knocked up? My quasi-reliable source also tells me that John Goodman of Roseanne fame is presently developing a sit-com for Fox TV. In an effort to distance himself from his previous work and to show his versatility as a Shakespearean actor, John will portray a beer-drinking-football-watching-blue-collar-guy, who is a single father to teenagers. He will also be gay. This begs the following questions. Will 54% of his teenage kids approve of his being gay? Or will they only approve 54% of the time?
