I went
out tonight for a few reasons: to celebrate my new job and quitting my
existing job, plus meeting up with my alleged significant other. Mr. Right
did not show up again, (he will henceforth be known as Mr. Ex.) but I was
in a good mood and wasn’t about to get teary eyed. I met up with a few
friends and had a few beers and a few laughs. A pleasant time was had by
all.
The bar I frequent is located
in the middle of a bar crawl, that is, a two-block area containing about
five bars. The owner of my bar chooses to refer to it as a "gay friendly"
establishment rather than a gay bar, and for the most part the crowd is
rather mixed. Needless to say as the night goes on a few people wander
in who don’t comprehend the scene immediately. More often than not they
step in, do a quick male to female ratio check, and then step out. No problem.
Occasionally they do not
step out, and this often results in problems. Sunday evening, a group of
intoxicated breeders and two drag queens found themselves in the same room.
Hilarity did not ensue. On two separate occasions I had to physically separate
individuals, and even though no one was having a good time, neither group
would leave. Go figure.
Tonight, however, was a completely
different story. A few hours or so before closing two guys wandered in.
They were not regulars, and were wearing wristbands from another club.
The bouncer in me labeled them trouble and I kept an eye on them. Well,
you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Their names were Jerry and
Rick, and they were two of the coolest guys I’ve met in a very long time.
They were straight (brothers) and had wandered in my mistake, but found
that the drinks were cheaper there and decided to stay. Shortly after arriving
Rick won a cheap toy radio in a bar raffle. They flirted with the resident
flamer, joked and had a great time. Neither was obnoxiously drunk, and
before the night was over I had danced with both, and one had (publicly)
shown off his Prince Albert. When the lights came up and it was time to
go I tried to say goodnight with a handshake. Both brushed my hand away
and hugged me. Obviously these are not your run of the mill straight boys.
I’ve noticed that straight
women are more likely to frequent gay bars, and admittedly I can see the
why. Gay bars offer music, dancing, friendly people and the chance of being
hit on is all but negligible. Straight guys obviously see things differently.
I might be generalizing, but I suspect that most straight guys see themselves
as the ultimate studs, and they "know" every gay man wishes to have sex
with them. Sorry to burst your collective bubble guys, but this is often
not the case. Chances are, if you have a hard time finding a woman to be
with you, a guy won’t want to be with you either.
Rick and Jerry are from out
of town, but say they’ll be coming back next weekend. I hope they do. Anyway,
I had a nice night out, met some new people, and hopefully made a couple
of new friends.
And all without you, Mr.
Ex.
