The Choice is not
Yours!
Everyday in the United States
thousands upon thousands of animals are put to sleep. Whether it be that
a suitable home could not be found, or they suffered from a debilitating
injury or illness. Their lives ended quickly and painlessly. Yet thousands
of men, women, and children are suffering everyday because of terminal
illness or injury. The healthcare companies and all the other people involved
keep them alive as long as possible, even though many of them may wish
to die and end their suffering.
How can we have compassion
enough for animals, to end their suffering, but let our fellow humans continue
to suffer? Our government and and lawmakers will put to death a convicted
murderer, humanely by lethal injection, in which you just fall asleep and
never wake up. But outlaw euthanasia for people who are dying an
agonizingly painful and slow death. Also, any person who dares to
help these people end their pain, will be punished to the fullest extent
of the law. These government officials obviously have never had to watch
a loved one suffer the inhumane torture of a slow painful death and beg
for someone to end their pain and suffering. Every adult out there who
is suffering should have the right to choose to end their life in peace
and dignity, if they so choose.
The bottom line is we have
more compassion and pity for a suffering animal, than we have for our fellow
human. How did this ever come to be? Is it that we are so selfish we can't
let go of our loved ones? So we hold on to some sort of hope, at
their expense? Or are the healthcare officials milking the system
for more money? Or is it that we truly do care more for our animals
than we do our fellow humans? What is wrong with this picture?
Slowly, more and more states
are passing laws dealing with the issue of euthanasia, some for, some against.
We as individuals can sign a DNR order, Do Not Resesitate, so that
if we are in a potentially debilitating accident, the hospital has the
right and is released from all liabilities associated with you dying, but
who plans for something like that. If we get sick or injured without the
DNR order, we as individuals lose that choice and are at the mercy of the
healthcare system to decide whether or not they should keep us alive no
matter how futile all efforts may be. As competent individuals, shouldn’t
we have the right to choose for ourselves?
