Ok…so the other day…I'm standing in line in the
supermarket…well actually it was more like camping out at the supermarket
because even though there was only one person ahead of me and he only had
5 items…still, it took nearly 20 minutes to get to the checkout. I know
you're all on the edge of your seats wondering "how could this be?" Well
its really very simple to understand when you take into account that the
guy in front of me spoke no English.
Yes...he got in his car…with a small child…went to the grocery store…and
attempted to buy 5 items with the linguistic skills of ketchup. No…I'm
not against the massive hordes of foreigners swarming into this country
on a daily basis…but I do think there needs to be some kind of mandatory
language requirement for entry. Maybe they should be able to speak
enough English to explain to the immigrations officials that their cousins,
nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, and great great grandmother's 3rd husbands
sister's hairdresser will be coming over soon as well..
Gee, it seems to me that if I were relocating to another country…I'd try
to at least learn enough of the language to get by…but no--not these folks..
And now we have to have interpreters in supermarkets…we have to choose
our language preference at the ATM and we have to constantly press 1 for
English…2 for Spanish and 3 for any other 3rd world half-baked country
that doesn't take care of its own citizens…but I digress….back to the market.
After nearly 20 minutes it was determined that our language wizard had
purchased a six pack of yogurt for the aforementioned child and said child
had started eating said yogurt (well it was more like a sloppy slurping
sort of thing) The father had dropped the yogurt lid deep into the bowels
of the shopping cart and so the clerk could not determine the price. Now
why didn't she just call for a price check? I wondered that too until I
finally got to the register and heard her mumbling in a language that sounded
like a cross between Vietnamese and Kligon. I paid for my order..went home
and cried..
