THE DEVIL WINS!!
I learned much from the campaign:
1. People hate specifics.
2. Empty platitudes SELL!
3. Ideas can kill a candidacy.
4. Run negative ads.
5. We are a nation of thieves.
6. I can piss-off everybody
if given enough time.
7. I don't have the temperment
to get elected.
8. Never run again.
Well, back to the column.
REUNION
Did ya' ever run into somebody
after two or three
decades and realize they
haven't changed?
This happened to me recently.
Back in '72 I was a
caddy. For six years I got
to caddy in a pro
tournament held annually
at Firestone Country Club.
In that year I caddied for
a guy who shared my
birthday, only his was a
decade earlier. It was a
pretty good week. Sat morning
we were 3 strokes off
the pace and even par. When
my golfer came out Sat
morning he said dejectidly,
"Well, I guess it's time
for a weekend round." I
couldn't believe what I was
hearing! This guy had given
up before he even
started! He proceed to fulfill
his profecy by
shooting 76 and 78 on the
weekend. He seemed like a
genuinely nice guy but he
couldn't control his temper
in the course.
After 28 years I ran into
him at a Senior PGA event in
which he was entered. I
spoke to him and he
remembered our birthday
thing, I wished him well and
he thanked me for saying
hello.
Same nice guy, same attitude
on the course. I spoke
to his caddy during the
first round and he told me he
about gave me the job earlier
in the day. Seems he
doesn't care for the personal
attacks from his boss.
It got me to thinkin'.(always
dangerous) What he
really needs in someone
to sit him down and give him a
good talkin' to. Quit beatin'
up on yourself(or
someone else) for a bad
shot you hit. Forget it and
move on. Beatin' on your
equipment doesn't improve
its performance. Control
the sentences in your head.
Just do it.
I guess that applies to life
as well: don't dwell on
the bad things in the past,
make a better future.
Physical violence only solves
things if you have
nukes. Manage your thoughts
or they will manage you.
As Woody Allen said, "90%
of life is just showing
up."
