Al Gore and the Undervotes Chad Gang.

In spite of Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision, Al Gore and his followers still say that he would have won if only there had been a ‘full and complete’ recount of the undervotes.  Al Gore, champion of the undervotes, would not have won a fair statewide recount.

The Florida State Law as stated on or before November 7, 2000 is not in conflict with the U.S. Constitution.  Unfortunately, the Florida Supreme Court changed the rules on November 21, 2000.  The United States Supreme Court told them that they were wrong in the most polite way that they could.  Seven of the nine Federal Supreme Court Justices ruled that is unconstitutional for there to be such widely disparate standards for re-counting votes in Florida.  Neither the Gore Gang nor the Bush Rangers were comfortable with what a full statewide recount might have yielded.  The thousand or so votes that the Gore Gang found in South Florida would be lost if strict re-count standards are observed in all Florida counties.  This strict remedy is what the seven-justice majority would have found constitutional.

So, like a stand-off in an old western, AlGore and his Undervote Chad Gang of desperados, continue to ride through the canyon of legal maneuvers.  The Bush Rangers with his Supreme Court posse are in hot pursuit.  The American voters are the horses that carry these two determined men.  The horses are lathered and exhausted.  Some of them are stumbling and panting in the unrelenting heat of media scrutiny.  Al Gore spurs his horse, Jessie, into one more heroic effort.  Two of the Federal Supreme Court Justices slow their horses to a walk.  Bush and his seven other rangers press on.  Joe, Al’s faithful sidekick, checks the stolen ballots in his saddlebags, and then presses on.  He does not know what cunning place Al Gore has found.  No one knows.   This mad, desperate run must end before the horses either collapse and die, or, buck their riders off.
